Drive to Stop Keystone XL Nets 770K Signatures

A 24-hour effort to gather 500,000 signatures from people opposed to the Keystone XL pipeline only needed a fraction of the time to reach its goal. 

A coalition of environmental and progressive groups and environmentally-conscious businesses sponsored the drive between noon yesterday and noon today and delivered the more than 770,000 signatures (on digital drives, of course, because hundreds of thousands of signatures would waste a lot of paper) to the Senate this afternoon.

"This is sort of a big anti-Valentine for tar sands," said Susan Casey-Lefkowitz, the international program director at the Natural Resources Defense Council, one of the participating groups.

The drive, largely a grassroots effort fueled through social media, comes as a group of senators is pushing legislation to improve the pipeline's chances.

Robert Redford wrote about the petition effort on the Huffington Post and Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org, appeared on "The Colbert Report" last night and urged viewers to sign on.
